Accommodations range from fair to deplorable (the quality drops off pretty quickly). The country's best hotels are in N'Djamena. Missions and guesthouses are another option. Hostels, called auberges, sometimes double as brothels. In the north a tent is your best option. Travelers can overnight in a village if they have permission from the local chief (take along a gift of a little tea and sugar to show your gratitude).
